About slowing down.

It’s a foggy & mild morning here in the Omaha area, which is right in my wheelhouse. Being that I needed a new bag of coffee for home, I thought it would be a good day to check out a different coffee place, do my Thursday writing, and take a walk around downtown. So, I ended up at Hardy Coffee Co. in Omaha’s Old Market. More on them in a future post.

I’m trying to get my walks in more, especially as the weather begins to warm up for good here. Spring and fall are my favorite seasons here, as they’re not too warm or too cool and can be a bit more misty and foggy at times. This is good weather for slowing down and catching your breath from life.

On that note of slowing down, I’m really getting the itch to ride my bike again. For years, I’ve thought about buying an electric bike. But, I already have an old manual bike around. I haven’t really ridden it at all over the last eight years, outside of one run about a year ago just to test things out. I think I definitely want to replace the drop bars with some flat ones so I can sit more upright on it. In general, it’ll need a bit of a tuneup before I seriously ride the thing. But, I think runs to the grocery store can still be in order for the meantime.

I used to ride all the time, especially when I lived in Lincoln. I was next to a bike trail that gave me easy access to downtown and Lincoln tends to have a little bit of a hipster feel that makes riding a bike around seem at least a little bit normal. Being able to ride allows me to slow down a bit. Compared to cars, bikes move at a bit more of a human scale, which allows me to notice my surroundings more. You can take in the environment around you, smell the air, and notice the house with the quirky lawn decoration. And, if I can get some exercise while getting groceries, why not? At least I won’t feel as lazy on that two-mile round trip.

I also just want to roam on the bike. I want to be in the community here. There’s events in many cities called “coffee outside” where you ride to a park, meet a bunch of random people, and make coffee. It would be a chance to meet some people in this city and a way to explore my way around a bit more. Maybe I can feel more of a connection to Omaha this way. As always, I’m willing to bring a friend along.

As for today, I’m going to walk along the river here and take in some scenery. After buying my supply of coffee of course.

Songs in the Chaos

This is my weekly list of songs that either caught my attention or came to mind this past week. I post these throughout the week on a site called Crucial Tracks, where they’re also added to a playlist on Apple Music. Feel free to follow me on either space.
