The Seattle Seahawks are Super Bowl LX Champions
I’ve been spoiled for the last two decades. The Seahawks played in Super Bowl LX (60) last night. 20 years ago, they played in Super Bowl XL (40) in Detroit. For most of those 20 years since, they’ve maintained a certain level of success, thanks in part to the ownership of the late Paul Allen, and now his sister, Jody. In 1997, Paul bought the team from former owner Ken Behring, who was hellbent on moving the team to Los Angeles following the 1995 season. Thankfully, the King County legislature stepped in, held the team to their lease of the Kingdome, and then brokered a sale to Allen.
After the sale, Allen would negotiate plans for a new stadium on the site of the old Kingdome. For two seasons, the Seahawks played at Husky Stadium at the University of Washington. In 2002, with a slightly new logo and team identity, and a move back to the NFC West, the Seahawks would move into Seahawks Stadium, now known as Lumen Field. Soon after, the success would come under then-head coach Mike Holmgren, culminating with an NFC Championship in 2005 and a Super Bowl XL appearance in Detroit, which they “lost” to the Steelers. The refs had a lot to do with that game, but I digress.
20 years later, the Seahawks win Super Bowl LX, over the New England Patriots. Seattle’s defense dominated throughout, and this is the kind of football I feel Seahawks fans have grown to love. Defense allows the fans to be loud. The better the defense plays, the louder the fans get, making life hard on opposing offenses and their communication. Good defense and a solid running game on offense are now the hallmarks of Seahawks football. Running back Kenneth Walker III won the game’s MVP last night, after 127 yards rushing on 27 attempts. Quarterback Sam Darnold didn’t have the best night, but Walker was the spark plug that made Darnold’s night easier.
This Super Bowl win, the Seahawks’ second in franchise history, was satisfying. They left no doubt on who the better team was, not only last night, but throughout the playoffs. It also got that New England monkey off their back. Now, no one can remind us of the interception in Super Bowl XLIX (49). The Seahawks beat the Patriots’ ass last night, now what?
I’m going to ride this high as long as I can. Seattle has played in four of the 50 Super Bowls they’ve been around for. Oh yeah, this was their 50th Anniversary season. They’ve won two of those games. The odds are not in anyone’s favor that they’re going to do this, even for the best teams. So, I’m savoring this. Thank you, Seahawks, for a fun season and a nice cap to this Seattle sports year. See you boys in the fall.
