Small Web July 2026
A year ago, I wrote this:
When I feel the pressure of this crazy world getting to the point where it feels like it’s too much, I tend to lean into the things I love. Whether it’s writing, cooking, getting outside, watching good television, or listening to music, these are the things that help me feel grounded.
I’ve been seeing posts about “Small Web July”, a concept pushed out by small cypress, which seeks to help us all disconnect from the big web, you know Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, and so on. This also includes changing how we digest news, getting away from the big sites and curating RSS feeds insteadI then listed the alternatives I was going to partake in, namely favoring non-algorithmic social media over Instagram & Facebook, reading via RSS feeds, using more pen & paper, and attempting to actually have a media diet. All of this as an approach to quiet my mind and destress a bit.
So, it’s July again and I feel like I’m in need of an escape. I allowed myself to get through the holiday weekend here in the States, but I’m now at a point where I can settle in and allow my world to quiet down. The list from a year ago still applies, but my major concerns are my mental and physical health and just nailing down some better habits. Social media can have its place, but I don’t want to find myself doomscrolling, which I’ve been doing a ton of lately.
Instead, I have albums to catch up on, I really want to catch up on The Bear so I can watch the current (and likely last) season, and I need to start working out again. I have a week off next week and I hope to find some state parks, but also have some exploring to do in my city as well. I hope this encourages me to write a little more.
So, this will be my hub for the next month. Frankly, it should always be my hub. But, far less socials, much more grounded stuff. That’s the aim here.
